About the book

''The Giver'' is very full of suspense, especially the direction, which it takes course, changes constantly.
In this short period of Jonas' life occurs much different important incidents from different sections of life.
The question, which arise while reading, are answered shortly after emerging.
I, in person, don't like the first pages of the book because they are in comparison to the rest really boring and you apprehend the relevance of the first pages primal in the later course of the book.
In contrast to the beginning I really like the end not just but barely owing to the open ending because it's perfect to work on at school.

While reading activity: Chapter 21

In the twenty-first chapter Jonas is together with Gabe on the run away from the community.
He didn't even got the important attributes, which the Giver wanted to give him so it's more complicated.
He took his father's bike with the baby's high chair, in which he put Gabe, and drove under cover of the night far away.
At night he raved as fast as he could and on day he scaned the ambit for a place to hide and to sleep.
He gave his smoothiest dreams to Gabe so that he was sleeping most of the time and when an airplane flew over their hads he remembered for snow and coldness and gave a part of this memories to Gabe in order that they freeze and the sonsors of the airplanes can't locate them.

While reading activity: Chapter 19

In the nineteenth chapter Jonas becomes acquaianted with some new possibilities and technologies, which he can use in his instruction.
He learns that he is allowed to do everything he wants, without worrying that others would query this.
So he's watching a video about the releasing of one of the twins, who his father had to care for and in this video he sees his father killing the twin with less weight.
He can't believe this because he always had thought that the releasing would be connected with a lot of fun for those, who are innocent.

While reading activity: Chapter 16

in contrast there is enough about this :)

While reading activity: Chapter 15

to such terrible views is nothing more to say...

While reading activity: Chapter 12

In chapter 12 you start to get in the known of the local occurrence.
Jonas experienced again a situation with his ''Capacity to See Beyond'' and then he talks about it with ''The Giver'', who assigned Jonas to call him like this.
Folliwing is told that in the world, as it exists in the community, is no color, no snow falling down and even no sunshine!
All this was aboliched by previous generations in order to achieve equality, which was to aim for.

Post reading tast

Dear Mrs. Bunstein,
I enjoyed the in which we worked with the book and we always had much fun in the lessons.
The book itself was not so bad as initially expected, but I still think that it's noch the perfect choice.
In my case I had especially with regard to the first pages many problems in understanding the plot and therefor the notion was quickly low, although it was in the following chapters in many times easier and more fun.
The job offers were mostly large and we could have chosen for each chapter a different task.
But I also have to say that these job offers seems to me a bit drab and I found myself a bit limited in most cases.
Working with the Pc seems to me rather difficult because it is inevitable that there are sometimes technical problems as it has taken me a few times.
Until now I always decided to complete those long time task on paper and I would have been happy about this offer.
Otherwise I really liked working with the book and especially the working atmosphere was very very good!!
 ;)

While reading activity: Chapter 9

I was really torn while reading chapter 9 because of the permanently change between positive and negative happenings.
On the one hand Jonas comes to know that he'll be isolated during his instruction and that he has to meet a lot of rules, which will change especially his relationship to his friends and to his family but also its relationship to the rest of the community.
This is proved directly by the respectul and almost reverential treatment towards him.
On the other hand it seems to be a bit like before his selection owing to his friendly talk with asher, the waving of his proud but not reverential parents and the exchanged congratulations with the other twelves.
Then in turn I read the rules another time and learned what it means to Jonas.
It is both shocking but it also brings a lot of tension in the action.
The story of the girl that was chosen years ago as well but then disappeared under mysterious circumstances is still the tip of the already existing high point.

Diary entry

Jonas, at the evening after the Ceremony of Twelves

Dear diary,
today something special has happened.
I already told you the last weeks taht my Ceremony of Twelves was coming soon and today it was the day the Ceremony took place.
I really have much to tell about this day but it's erally too much so I skip the first part and start with the assignment.
it began as usual, the Chief Elder assigned on after the other in the right order but then, as it should have been my turn to go to the stage she called number twenty, Pierre.
She just skipped me!
i felt really vervous and frightened.
I thought that she may has forgotten me - but it wasn't a mistake.
I had to go to the stage as the last one and then she told me that I would be the new Receiver of Memories!
I already feel nervous and apprehensive.
It's such an honour to be selected and I already don't know what they expect from me in this job and what I will have to lern for it.
The actual Receiver of Memories is an old man, looking different, but he seems to be very wise and I know that he'll teach me lots of things.
I may won't understand those things right now but I'm sure I will understand them soon.
I don't realize already that I'm the selected one soI think it's the best to sleep at first and tomorrow I will maybe more sure about it.

Chapter 8 - the selection and the concept of Sameness

The selection doesn't really fit to the concept of Sameness because of a few things:
The first cause therefor is that Jonas was skipped in the Ceremony of Twelves and he should come to the stage as the last one.
It's very special because it shows that his assignment is more important than the others.
The next factor is that they don't call him assigned to his job but ''selected''.
Another thing is taht the officiating Receiver of Memories sits in the middle of the Elder, as ''central man'' and he looks different from the other Elders.
There is, too, no Sameness because of the honour and awe the citizens give to him.
And the most important reason for this fiction are the qualities a Receiver must have.
It means that all the other citizens don't have these qualities and taht Jonas is better than the others and more important for the community.

Summary

extract from chapter 8 - the Chief Elder reports about Jonas' selection

The extract is about Jonas' selection at the Ceremony of Twelves, at which he expects to get his assignment but he never had thought taht he could be selected for something special.
The Chief Elder first skips him but at least he shall come to the stage, where she tells him and the citizens that he has been identified as possible Receiver of Memories many years ago, observed carefully to look wether he has the qualities a Receiver of Memories must have and now he is selected as the new Receiver.
The qualities are intelligence, which could show in his school days, courage, which he could show in his volunteer hours, integraty, wisdom and the ''Capacity to See Beyond'', which he could show in the incident with the apple.
In this incident with the apple he schowed that he doesn't see the things just like they are.
He is looking beyond and he could see the capacity, which an apple could show, when someone looks at the things not just like they really are.
In chapter 8 this happens again, not with an apple but with the citizens.

Diary entry

Jonas, at the following evening after his dream about Fiona

Dear diary,
last night I had a really mysterious dream.
First I dreamed about my volunteer hours I had last Monday with Fiona, a cute, little girl I know since I was born.
She is so canny and judicious and I always have so much fun with her because she's amusing, too.
And she looks just wonderfull!  I... I really like her.
But back to my dream... like I already said at first it was a kind of a dèjá vu but then everything turned out different.
Suddenly we have been in a diverse room.
She stood a little bit in front of me, just covered by a haze, allocating with her back to me and looking at me over her shoulder.
A mysterious feeling arised my body.
A feeling I never felt before, but I affected it.
I imperative wanted to approach her and as I went the first steps she dropped the haze to the bottom.
Thereon I awoke and my heart was raving, I breathed hectically and I was soaked with sweat.
I was afraid owing to the dream because it's forbidden to look at the naked body from other people of the community and I had such a requirement to see and to touch her!
I was really assuaged that it was over, but as I noticed that I'll have to tell my parents about it I felt a chill shiver arising me.
Furthermore I couldn't sleep the whole night.
At the subsequent beakfast I had to tell my family about this dream but I didn't know how to explain it.
I didn't even know myself what has happened.
So after a while I just reported it expecting to get a chastisement because of the dream, but as I had finished talking my parents refered me that it's normal to have those dreams, feelings and suddenly arising requirements.
I couldn't believe, what I was hearing.
It should be normal to have feelings, which totally doesn't conform to the rules of the community?!
It was badly horrify to me and I had to think about it the complete day but I still can't retrace it!
Maybe I will tomorrow... I hope so because now I am shaked to the core!
I'm going to sleep currently to recover from this incident.

Chapter 3

I had really big problems in understanding the story of chapter 3.
The main storyline arises primal at the end of the chapter.
It's about Jonas' experience with the apple, which he gains while he's playing catch and throw with his friend asher.
For Jonas this game is breezing and because of that boring, too but he's game because it's a good practice for his friend, who hasn't the standart physical coordination.
While they are playing Jonas notices that the apple ''cahnges'' while it is in the air.
And right this part is the part I don't understnad bacuase I can just barely imagine how the apple should ''change''.
Maybe in it's bulk, it's form or even in it's colours... but I'm not sure.

Pre-reading task

My imagination of the issue from ''The Giver''

I think the cover doesn't give many information about the issue from the book.
There are a young boy and a man standing towards each other and stratching out their hands.
They seem to be in a dark room with a window behind the edge of the cover because you can see sunshine coming from the right into the picture.
I can't really draw many conclusions about the issue by reason of the cover but because of the title.
The title ''The Giver'' could be interpreted in many different ways but i imagine it is meant that someone gives oder transmits other people their hope and vitality back threw undergrowing important situations of the live from these people which they dissolved wrong and feel sad because of that.
But like i already said there are many ways to interpret cover and tile and i'm very strained to ascertain the right one.

My impression of chapter two

In chapter 2 Jonas and his parents are talking about the ceremonys of different ages and the changing which they implicate.
His parents want to anlighten Jonas about the changing, which approaches him.
They say that he will have a big changing in the contact with his friends because he won't see them anymore as often as he does now but as well they tell him that he'll find new ones, who will have the same interest like he has.
His father tells him on the one hand about his ceremony of twelve and that he has really enjoyed it and on the other hand that some people made their basical experiences in his age.
For me the most important conclusion in this chapter is at page 19 line 5/6 in which Jonas' father sais: ''... as children we must experience all of those things.''.
I think this chapter deals with growing up in generell and in my opinion this conclusion expresses the most important points of growing up.

Summary: Chapter one

The book starts with a flashback from jonas into his eralier childhood, in which he describes his perception of frightening and he is giving some examples, which deals with his experiences.
After this definition the reader first meets Jonas' family while the dinner.
The family consists next to jonas of his little seven years old sister Lily and his parents, who aren't named.
They have a fix ritual, scilicet that they are all telling every evening about their feelings they had this day.
Jonas and Lily are normally fighting for being the first one who starts telling about his feelings but this day Jonas wasn't able to file his feelings und so his sister made the start followed by his mother and his father.
I think their storys are told because of giving some information to the reader about the live from Jonas and his family.
After that Jonas was a little bit clearer about his feelings and added them to the conversation.
His story is about the ceremony of twelve, which seems to be an important part of his life because his parents wants to have a private conversation with Jonas about it.
